Javier Mascherano Set to Become Inter Miami’s New Manager

Javier Mascherano is reportedly poised to take over as the new manager of Inter Miami, reuniting him with former teammate and fellow Argentine, Lionel Messi, in Florida for the upcoming season. According to renowned journalist César Luis Merlo, Mascherano has signed a long-term deal with the Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise.

The 40-year-old will step down from his current role as head coach of Argentina’s under-20 national team, where he has been instrumental in developing some of the country’s most promising young talents, including several prospects tied to Inter Miami.

A Stellar Career on the Field

Mascherano’s managerial move comes after an illustrious playing career. He joined Liverpool in 2006 and spent four successful seasons at Anfield, forming a formidable midfield trio alongside Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso. From there, he transitioned to Barcelona, where he played for eight seasons, sharing the field with icons like Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.

During his tenure with Barcelona, Mascherano amassed an impressive list of accolades, including five La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. His extensive experience at the highest levels of football has set the stage for what many hope will be a fruitful managerial career.

Replacing Gerardo Martino

Mascherano’s appointment follows the resignation of Gerardo “Tata” Martino earlier this week. Martino, who previously coached Messi at both Barcelona and with Argentina’s national team, stepped down after a bittersweet season. Under Martino’s guidance, Inter Miami achieved unprecedented success, winning its first two trophies: the 2023 Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season record in MLS.

Despite these achievements, Inter Miami’s playoff run ended in disappointment, with the team eliminated in the first round. Martino cited personal reasons for his departure, leaving a significant legacy with a 26-9-12 regular-season record during his tenure.

Martino’s era also coincided with a series of high-profile signings, including Messi, Busquets, Alba, and Suárez, transforming Inter Miami into a global football powerhouse.

Challenges Ahead for Mascherano

Mascherano’s first full season as a manager at the club level is shaping up to be a demanding one. Inter Miami is expected to embark on another international preseason tour in early 2025, following a similar approach to this year. The team’s schedule will also include a grueling 34-match MLS season and participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins in June.

Training camp for the 2025 season is set to kick off in January, giving Mascherano a limited window to implement his strategies and establish his leadership style. His ability to navigate these challenges while building on the foundation laid by Martino will be critical to his success.

A Promising New Era

For Inter Miami, Mascherano’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter. With his deep connection to Messi and his understanding of the high-pressure environment at top clubs, Mascherano’s leadership could help the team continue its meteoric rise on the global stage. Fans will be eager to see how this next era unfolds as the former midfield maestro takes the reins in South Florida.
